INSPIRATION:
Burnout is a form of exhaustion caused by constantly feeling swamped. It's a result of excessive and prolonged emotional, physical, and mental stress. It is most prominent among employees. This condition of mental stress represented by the high burnout rate is what inspired us to come up with this idea to improve the same. Thus, we aim to identify increased burnout among employees and suggest effective measures to improve the same. Further, the following statistics served as a great motivation and inspiration for us to go forward with this idea : 75% of workers have experienced burnout, with 40% saying they’ve experienced burnout specifically during the pandemic. 36% of employees said their organization isn’t doing anything to help with employee burnout. Burned-out employees are 63% more likely to take a sick day and 2.6 times as likely to be actively seeking a different job.
HOW DOES IT WORK:
From some basic information about the employee such as resource allocation, mental fatigue score, no of hours worked, etc., Serene determines their burnout rate and suggests a solution for the same. This solution comprises a well-defined schedule consisting of the activities such as morning exercise, listening to nice motivating and soothing music, etc.
IMPLEMENTATION:
We have implemented our project idea through our app named "Serene". We have used the languages, kotlin, XML, and python for its implementation. We have used a flask framework. We have hosted our ML model using Heroku platform. We have applied the Random Forest regressor Algorithm to our dataset. We have used Firebase Database and Authentication.
CHALLENGES WE RAN INTO:
Our model included some preprocessing of data such as binary encoding, and extracting date features which were something that was new to us and challenging as well. Then integrating it with Heroku was also something we did for the first time.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS THAT WE'RE PROUD OF:
Our accomplishments include gaining some real insights regarding product and service-based companies' work cultures.Also while working on our project we learned about the facts that ultimately lead to the high burn-out rate of the employees and thereby we were able to effectively deal with all these factors in our project . We were also able to successfully come to the conclusion as to how we can compute burn-out rate for the companies, at a broader level, thereby contribute to the growth of various industries. Through this project of ours we have accomplished a greater goal of dealing with the problem of self care and mental health which is of utmost importance.
WHAT WE LEARNED:
We observed that women who work from home have a comparatively higher burnout rate as compared to men. And it taught us that we should take care of our own mental health as that is equally important as work. There were many other similar observations .
WHAT'S NEXT FOR SERENE:
As mentioned earlier, as of now Serene can be used at the Employee level to calculate an employee's burn-out rate and suggest an effective schedule to maintain or reduce the same. But that's not it, we can further expand its scope and facilitate a Company's Burn-Out rate calculation via Serene. This can be helpful in comparing various companies on the basis of their average burn-out rates. Thereby, encouraging companies, with a higher overall burn-out rate, to maintain a stress-free and healthy work environment for their employees.
