Inspiration

After a recent influx in dangerous activity around the University of Washington, we thought to create our own safety platform that not only alerts users of hazards nearby, but also allows them to contact friends who are close by and request them to be walking buddies. While there are some applications that already perform the previously listed tasks, none of them combine them into one single app. Many of the apps that also employ some of these features tend to charge a monthly premium in order to access them. We hope to unite the community in a safer way and stop the risk of crime in neighborhoods.

What it does

Sentry is a mobile application that provides users with a more enhanced scope of their surrounding environment. Through specialized features, such as viewing nearby hazards and booking a walking buddy, Sentry prepares individuals for any dangers ahead. Other features include adding contacts as friends, calling Sentry agents for any needed assistance, and checking local news.

How we built it

We utilized the UI/UX design tools provided by Figma to develop a rough prototype of our application. Taking inspiration from other mobile applications, we modeled our interface to showcase a user-friendly and navigable experience that is attractive to all ages and demographics.

Challenges we ran into

We had troubles at the beginning just choosing an idea that would be beneficial for our community in the long-term. We brainstormed several ideas for a while before even starting to work on Sentry, itself.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Being able to design, complete and present a fully-fledged application in less than a day was a major accomplishment by our team, especially since there were only two of us. We believe that our application has the capabilities to be used, not only now, but for years to come.

What we learned

We learned how intricate the design process of creating an application can actually be. We went through numerous design changes throughout the course of Saturday afternoon until we finally came across a style we both liked. Every miniscule detail had to be accounted for, in order to create a aesthetically pleasing user interface.
