Inspiration
We, as a team, are extremely passionate about solving pending real-world issues that have serious impacts on people. Crowded areas often cause serious injuries, sometimes resulting in death. So we built Sentra. Sentra
What it does
Sentra uses the accelerometer, gyroscope, and orientation sensors in every smartphone to detect crowd dynamics as they form. One phone won't tell you much, but when many phones in the same spot start moving together in a similar rhythm, a pressure wave is forming through the crowd, a major warning before disaster strikes. Sentra captures it and alerts everyone in the area while there is still time to open an exit or to stop letting people from getting in.
How we built it
We built a web API that accesses the phone's hardware sensors to collect real-time movement data. We made the backend using FastAPI and an SQLite database, while the frontend was built through JS to handle the phone's local sensors. The frontend was done using HTML and CSS.
Challenges we ran into
Time was our biggest enemy in this entire project. Such a daunting project took us a great amount of effort to finish in time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The fact that we were able to develop such a complex project in such a short amount of time, given that we are beginners.
What we learned
We learned a significant amount combined about UI design and how to find data.
What's next for Sentra
We hope to integrate hardware in order to increase its efficiency and globalize the idea.
