Inspiration

Outdoor activities — from hiking and camping to maritime navigation and team expeditions — depend heavily on weather conditions. We were inspired by the need to protect people who venture outdoors, especially after hearing stories of preventable accidents caused by sudden weather changes. We wanted to build a comprehensive safety platform that goes beyond simple forecasts to provide AI-powered, actionable alerts that could genuinely save lives.

What it does

Sentinel Weather is a real-time weather monitoring platform with 9 specialized dashboards designed for outdoor safety:

AI-Powered Graded Alerts — 4-tier severity system (Informational → Emergency) with actionable guidance Safety Score Dashboard — Real-time outdoor safety rating (0-100) based on multiple weather factors Team Tracking — Multi-person location tracking with vitals, trajectory history, and emergency coordination Maritime Safety — Nautical charts, tide predictions, sea state monitoring, and collision radar Health Monitoring — Biometric integration with heart rate, SpO2, and AI safety recommendations Route Planning — Weather-integrated route analysis with hazard prediction and gear checklists

How we built it

Frontend: React + TypeScript with Vite for fast development UI/UX: Custom glassmorphism design system with Space Grotesk typography Data Visualization: SVG-based charts, gauges, and interactive maps Real-time Updates: WebSocket integration for live weather data Backend Architecture: Node.js + Express with PostgreSQL and Redis caching AI Integration: Gemini-powered safety recommendations and alert generation

Challenges we ran into

Designing responsive dashboards that work across mobile, tablet, and desktop without losing functionality Creating intuitive data visualizations (safety dials, elevation charts, radar displays) that convey critical information at a glance Balancing feature richness with UI simplicity for safety-critical scenarios where users need fast decisions Implementing real-time multi-person tracking with historical trajectory storage for emergency response

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built 9 fully responsive, production-ready dashboard pages Created a cohesive design language with glassmorphism and premium aesthetics Developed a 4-tier graded alert system with clear, actionable guidance Implemented maritime safety features including tide graphs, AIS tracking, and EPIRB integration Designed team tracking with location history for emergency rescue scenarios

What we learned

The importance of UI/UX in safety-critical applications — clarity can save lives How to build complex data visualizations with SVG and React Real-time architecture patterns for WebSocket-based applications The value of AI-powered recommendations in providing context-aware safety guidance Responsive design techniques for dashboard-heavy applications

What's next for Sentinel Weather

Mobile Apps: Native iOS/Android applications with push notifications Wearable Integration: Direct sync with smartwatches for biometric monitoring Offline Mode: Critical alerts available without connectivity API Platform: Open API for third-party outdoor apps and services Machine Learning: Predictive weather modeling for personalized safety recommendations Enterprise Features: Organization-wide team management and compliance reporting
