Sentinel Assault: Build the Network. Break the Machine.
Inspiration
Sentinel Assault was inspired by several games that shaped my understanding of strategy and progression, including Mega Man, Advance Wars, Kingdom Rush, and classic real-time strategy games. One thing I always appreciated about Mega Man was how every victory mattered. Defeating a boss didn't simply unlock the next level—it gave players a new ability that changed how they approached future challenges.
I wanted to combine that feeling of meaningful progression with the strategic decision-making found in territory control and tower defense games.
At the same time, I noticed that many tower defense games focus almost entirely on combat. Once the towers are placed, the primary challenge becomes reacting to enemy waves. I wanted to explore a different question:
What if the battlefield itself became the strategy?
That question became the foundation of the Portal Network system and ultimately the core identity of Sentinel Assault.
What I Built
Sentinel Assault is a mobile-first Tower Defense & Strategy game where players command a squad of specialized SD mechs tasked with reclaiming territory from an expanding Machine Swarm.
Players deploy four unique mech classes:
- Scout
- Defender
- Attacker
- Engineer
Together, these units establish and protect a Portal Network that powers expansion across the battlefield.
Rather than simply surviving enemy waves, players must:
- Capture territory
- Build Portal Nodes
- Generate resources
- Protect supply lines
- Liberate entire regions
Each liberated region rewards players with a new technology while simultaneously weakening the Machine Core, the central AI controlling the Machine Swarm.
The campaign culminates in a final confrontation against the Sovereign Nexus, an evolved form of the Machine Core that incorporates every system and technology encountered throughout the game.
Design Philosophy
The design is built around a simple progression model:
Liberate Region → Gain Technology → Unlock New Strategy → Weaken Machine Core
Each region contributes a critical technology to the player's arsenal:
- Energy Conduits
- Rail Technology
- Cryo Generator
- Reinforced Chassis
- Signal Interceptor
- Plasma Artillery
- Quantum Portal Drive
These technologies are intentionally scaffolded so that each victory prepares players for the next challenge.
I wanted every mission to feel meaningful and every reward to have lasting strategic value.
What I Learned
One of the biggest lessons during the design process was recognizing that progression is often more satisfying than power.
Early versions of the concept focused primarily on defending territory and defeating enemy waves. While functional, the design lacked a strong sense of purpose.
The breakthrough came when I shifted the focus from individual battles to campaign-wide consequences.
Once regional technologies and the Machine Core weakening system were introduced, every mission gained additional meaning. Players were no longer simply winning levels—they were dismantling an empire piece by piece.
This change transformed the game from a collection of battles into a connected strategic journey.
Challenges
The biggest design challenge was creating a mechanic that differentiated Sentinel Assault from traditional tower defense games.
Many strategy games already feature waves, upgrades, and territory control. I needed a system that connected those mechanics in a way that felt unique.
The Portal Network became that solution.
Designing the network required balancing several competing goals:
- It needed to be easy to understand.
- It needed to create meaningful decisions.
- It needed to remain important throughout the entire game.
- It needed to work naturally on mobile devices.
Another challenge was ensuring that progression remained meaningful over time. The regional technology system was developed specifically to prevent upgrades from feeling arbitrary and to ensure that every advancement contributed directly to the larger campaign.
Why Sentinel Assault
At its core, Sentinel Assault is about transforming chaos into control.
Players begin each mission surrounded by hostile territory and limited resources. Through strategy, planning, and expansion, they gradually turn that hostile landscape into a functioning network of connected sectors.
Every captured territory strengthens the player.
Every Portal Node extends their reach.
Every liberated region weakens the enemy.
Every victory matters.
The result is a strategy experience where tactical decisions, long-term planning, and meaningful progression work together toward a single goal:
Build the Network. Break the Machine.
