Sentelly

Inspiration

I am an Austrian student with a weakness in language (German and English), but I know that I need to be proficient in English to reach my goals. So I thought, what would be something that doesn't exist in that form and that will help me improve my English?

What it does

Sentelly is an AI-powered dictionary that lets you search for a word or a phrase to get an explanation about what it means and when to use it.

How I built it

Sentelly was built with Next.js, Tailwind. And for the backend, I use Appwrite because I already had some experience with Supabase, so I wanted to get known with Appwrite. For the AI I choose the Gemini API. At first, I brainstormed about the design with ChatGPT. After that, I prompted Bolt about the idea.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge was Appwrite, the application tracks every activity from the user, which was one of the hardest parts to do.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

It is one of the first apps I built that I use regularly. I have already built a lot of applications, but all of them are too big; I never got to a point where the app is useful except for Sentelly.

What I learned

I learned a lot about how to use AI in daily life workflow and where not to use it.

What's next for Sentelly

I want to build a browser extension and other things to make the usage faster and the accessible so that it doesn't feel like an induraption.
