Noisy restaurants. Scratchy bed sheets. Strong odors. Flashing lights. For all the ways the world provides exciting and compelling ways to engage, it can also be irritating and anxiety-provoking for all of us at times. For people with autism, and other conditions that involve differences in the perception of sensory experiences, many places and events can be almost intolerable.
But we can work together to make the world more comfortable for everyone. Sensory Friendly and Aware Environments (SAFE) aims to do just that. SAFE helps businesses, organizations and agencies to train their employees, make accommodations in their settings, and increase public awareness about sensory differences. As people become more aware of their own sensory preferences and differences, they will not only have more satisfying experiences in the places they live, work and play, they will also develop increased understanding and tolerance for differences in others. We all want to feel good in our own skin-and when we do, we can help those who live with sensory challenges to do the same.
