Inspiration
Everyone on the team has an elderly person in their life that we all care about, and we never know what their health truly looks like, especially when there is distance between each other. We wanted to close down that distance by creating an application that can be a bridge to fill in that gap and ensure that the elderly person is being looked after the way they deserve, and provide peace of mind for their relatives.
What it does
We are creating an application that can be run on mobile devices and accessible through the web. This application will leverage various technologies that are already prevalent in most people's lives, such as phones and home systems. We will use those technologies to collect various data that will be provided to authorized users such as relatives and doctors. The doctor will also have an interface where they will be able to access the various metrics that will be provided through the data to see the patient's health progress and prescribe medicines or assign activities accordingly. The authorized users will also have an interface where they can view the prescribed medicines, metrics, and reminders which they can help enforce through sending notifications. The notifications will leverage various technologies such as phone notifications and virtual assistant technologies such as Alexa or Google Home. The elderly will have an interface that will consist of a list of tasks to accomplish at given times throughout the day, which they must complete and notify any authorized users if they encounter any conflicts.
How we built it
We leveraged React to create a web application with various interfaces designed for the elderly, authorized users, and doctors. We created Figma designs for the future of the product.
Challenges we ran into
Initially, we planned to provide various features on the elderly interface requiring more effort on their side, which we realized was not a great approach after having a team discussion with a mentor. We realized that for this application to be successful on a large scale we would need it to be extremely simple and require minimal effort on the elderly, especially since this is meant to benefit them in the long run. Minimizing the effort on the elderly side was one of the biggest challenges we faced because we needed to gather sufficient data from them without requiring too much effort and responsibility being put on them.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The idea itself is a very great accomplishment that we are proud of because not only does it help make stronger connections with your elders, but it still allows them to keep their individuality, while also promoting and enforcing long-term health habits. We are also proud of the design that we have developed because we made it as simple as possible for the elderly to use our application and use all of its features to the best of its ability.
What we learned
We learned about react, virtual assistance programming languages such as Alexa skills, cognitive enhancement, and cognitive stimulation therapy.
