Inspiration
As someone who worked at a retirement home for 2+ years, I know how important being social is for the elderly. Coronavirus has stripped senior citizens of their ability to mingle with their family and friends, so our team decided to do something about it.
What it does
SeniorSoulmates is a smart AI that will chat with a lonely senior looking for someone to talk to.
How we built it
Using VSCode and Python, we used the chatbot package to train an AI that would be able to speak to seniors. In addition, we added conversation topics seniors might engage in more than the average person, for example: knitting, fishing, grandkids, and reading.
Challenges we ran into
This was the first hackathon for both of us, so we faced challenges from the get-go. Everything from getting the interactive code editor to work to downloading the chatbot package correctly posed a challenge, but we both learned a great deal.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Coming up with a project we are both proud of, despite being in two polar-opposite time zones (Davis, California and Mumbai, India).
What's next for SeniorSoulmates
Hopefully making our video mock-up a reality, and integrating our code into a true IOS application!
