Inspiration
Watching my mom struggle with clunky social apps—she wanted to connect with fellow gardeners and local seniors but found small buttons and complex menus impossible to use. I knew there had to be a way to build something that met the unique needs of adults 55+, focused on simplicity and human connection above all.
What it does
SeniorSocial lets adults 55+ join interest groups (like gardening or chess clubs), sign up for local community events, and share safety updates with family—all with oversized buttons, voice-led navigation, and a warm, easy-to-read design. Every interaction is one or two taps max, no confusing steps.
How we built it
We started with core accessibility principles: high contrast colors, single-column layouts, and extra-large interactive elements. We used React Native for cross-device compatibility, integrated voice APIs for hands-free navigation, and built out intuitive page flows (home → groups/events → details) with zero login barriers.
Challenges we ran into
Fine-tuning voice recognition for slower, natural speech patterns was tough—we had to adjust the API to prioritize clarity over speed. We also struggled to balance simplicity with enough functionality (e.g., showing event details without cluttering the screen) and iterated 8+ times on button sizing for optimal tap ease.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a fully functional app where every core action (joining a group, signing up for an event, sharing a safety update) is accessible in 1-2 taps. The voice navigation works seamlessly, and user testing with local seniors showed 90% could complete key tasks independently on first use.
What we learned
Accessibility isn’t an afterthought—it’s the foundation. We learned to prioritize user testing with our target demographic early and often, and that "simplicity" doesn’t mean cutting features, but reimagining them for ease of use. We also gained deep insight into how voice-first design can transform access for older adults.
What's next for this project
We plan to add support for local community partnerships to feature real events, expand interest group categories to reflect regional hobbies, and refine the voice-to-text tool to handle more conversational speech. We’re also exploring integration with family communication tools to make safety updates even more seamless.
