Inspiration:
We were inspired by the struggles of senior citizens who often miss out on government schemes designed for their welfare. Complex digital portals, lack of awareness, and difficulty in reading or navigating apps create barriers. We wanted to bridge this gap with a simple, accessible, and inclusive mobile solution.
What it does:
SeniorSetu is a mobile app that helps senior citizens easily discover and understand government schemes. It allows users to search for schemes, listen to scheme details through voice narration (Text-to-Speech), and bookmark schemes for later reference. Real-time updates ensure that seniors always have access to the latest information.
How we built it:
We built SeniorSetu in Android Studio using Java. The backend uses Firebase Authentication for secure logins and Firestore for real-time scheme data. The app features RecyclerView for scheme cards, SearchView for quick discovery, and a bookmark system to save schemes. We integrated Text-to-Speech API to provide voice narration, making the app more accessible for seniors who face reading difficulties.
Challenges we ran into:
One major challenge was designing a user-friendly interface suitable for senior citizens, with larger text, simple navigation, and minimal clutter. Implementing smooth voice narration without lag was another hurdle. Managing real-time bookmark synchronization and fixing UI issues like the “Load More” button inside scheme cards also tested us during development.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
We are proud of creating a working MVP that directly addresses a real-world social issue. The integration of voice features to help seniors with reading difficulties stands out as a key achievement. We are also proud of our clean UI design tailored for seniors and the ability to sync schemes in real-time through Firebase.
What we learned:
We learned the importance of empathy in design, especially when building for digitally excluded groups like senior citizens. Using the Lean Startup approach, we saw how quickly building and testing an MVP provides better insights than extensive planning. We also gained hands-on experience with Firebase, Text-to-Speech integration, and accessibility-focused mobile app design.
What's next for Seniorsetu:
The next step is to make SeniorSetu smarter and more inclusive. We plan to add AI-powered personalized scheme recommendations, multilingual voice support for regional languages, and a voice-based chatbot for hands-free navigation. We also envision direct integration with government portals for seamless applications and partnerships with NGOs and state organizations to scale the app’s impact.
