Inspiration

Watching my grandmother struggle with age-related memory changes sparked the idea—she wanted to stay mentally active but found most tools too complex. I saw a gap for a senior-centric platform that prioritized simplicity, warmth, and family connection, not just clinical tracking.

What it does

SeniorMind offers 65+ seniors 5-10 minute daily cognitive exercises (memory, attention, language, logic) with accessible UI, plus progress tracking. Family caregivers get read-only dashboards to monitor trends and gentle alerts for unusual patterns—all with the senior’s full privacy control.

How we built it

We started with user interviews with seniors and caregivers to define core needs (large text, slow animations, non-alarming language). Built the frontend in React with accessibility first; Node.js/PostgreSQL for backend data storage; AWS for secure family access; Stripe for subscription management; Chart.js for easy-to-read trend graphs.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing simplicity with functionality was tough—seniors needed minimal navigation, but caregivers needed meaningful data. We also had to ensure privacy controls were clear (seniors approve all family access) without confusing the UI. Adjusting exercise difficulty progressively while avoiding frustration took months of testing with older users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a UI that 90% of test users (65+) could navigate independently; designing alerts that feel supportive (not alarming); building a privacy framework that puts seniors in control; and seeing families connect through friendly game challenges on the platform.

What we learned

Accessibility isn’t an afterthought—it’s the foundation. Seniors value dignity and autonomy above all, so every feature (from voice guidance to progress language) had to center their agency. We also learned family caregivers crave connection, not just data—so we focused on positive, wellness-oriented framing over clinical jargon.

What's next for this project

We plan to add mild cognitive exercise personalization based on long-term performance, expand voice guidance to cover more languages, and build a lightweight mobile web version (optimized for senior-friendly devices). We’re also testing a small pilot with senior centers to make access more widespread.
