Inspiration

During Covid-19, seniors, especially those living alone, there are less chances for them to contact people for them to help in person. That’s why, we thought of a remote “helper” that could contain information about online services, and suggest activities for those who are bored.

What it does

The app is full of information from the local area you are living in, including local activities for the age group, computer / online service help, and mental health resources such as counselling and help lines.

How we built it

Leveraging Google’s UI development tool, flutter, the app was created using android studio developer. By learning the fundamentals of the dart language, we were able to take advantage of flutter's fast development to create a functioning prototype of a services app.

Challenges we ran into

Having never used Android studio or flutter, the download process was rather long and not intuitive. This was a significant hurdle we had to surmount before further project planning could ensue. Additionally, implementing many of our ideas proved to be a challenge with the limited skills in app development that we possessed, however, with lots of research and learning, we were able to build up our skills and knowledge relatively quickly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of ourselves for overcoming the first hurdle of learning how to use the framework and language, and finishing our project. This will be the first step towards the future of our software development careers.

What we learned

We learned how to use flutter and android studio, and overall, how to plan, design and implement a mobile app. Through teamwork and perseverance, we pulled through despite being first-timers.

What's next for Elderon

We are hoping to be able to implement many more interactive features, such as an RSS news feed, allowing for real time information on new events, activities, and opportunities. Incorporating positive feedback to help motivate users to stay physically, and mentally healthy. The biggest step in the future, will be launching into other communities, and being able to continuously collect data on current and upcoming opportunities in each region.
