Inspiration

A destination may be nearby but still take a long time to reach. For seniors, walking distances, bus waits and transfers can make everyday journeys difficult. We wanted to understand how easily seniors can reach both essential care and places like markets and hawker centres.

What it does

SeniorGoWhere aims to estimate door-to-door journey times, accounting for slower walking and a preference for fewer transfers.

Users will be able to compare journeys to Active Ageing Centres, polyclinics, hospitals, markets and hawker centres. We also plan to explore Park Connector Network (PCN) walking links.

Our pilot covers Sembawang, Bukit Merah and Tampines. We will compare neighbourhoods by journey time and highlight areas where many seniors face poor access.

How we plan to build it

We will combine LTA DataMall bus data, OneMap routing, elderly population statistics and destination locations. NParks maps will support our exploration of PCN connections.

Using Databricks, we will clean and join the data, calculate journey estimates and build an interactive dashboard showing travel-time breakdowns and destinations reachable within a chosen time limit.

What we learned

Counting nearby bus routes does not fully explain accessibility. Where those buses go, how often they arrive and how much walking a journey requires all matter.

Challenges

Our main challenges will be matching locations across datasets, estimating realistic waiting times and checking whether PCN links are suitable for the journeys we suggest. We will make assumptions visible and validate sample journeys against an existing journey planner.

What's next

During the two-week sprint, we aim to build the pilot dashboard and check 20 sample journeys. We will also explore how improved bus frequency could reduce travel times.
