Inspiration

We really wanted to hone in on helping senior members of our community, as they are often overlooked and under apricated. We found that technology, the world doesn't accommodate, nor give much attention to members of society who need clear and understandable instructions. To make there lives easier, and to make sure they can have access to the benefits they deserve, we wanted to develop an application compiles all of the senior benefits we can find from the web into one easy to access place.

What it does

Our application scrapes information about senior discounts from popular websites in a local area. It then displays those discounts as "coupons" that users can browse through and save. Anytime they are deciding they might want to go shopping or out to eat, they can view the discount, the name of the store, the age requirements, the address and website of the company, and any other info pertaining to their benefits.

How we built it

Although we initially wanted to build a mobile application, we decided a web application would be more feasible within our time frame. We used standard web languages (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) to provide functionality to our idea.

Challenges we ran into

We had trouble finding the right idea that could really provide benefit to the seniors in our community. Our project can scale quite quickly, and we needed to reduce our scope in order to make the prototype possible within the time frame The cost of using google APIs in order to find local business is expensive.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are quite proud of our idea in general, and the possibility to scale. We are also proud of newly learned skills in website cashing and local browser storage to make the data persist on multiple webpages.

What we learned

We learned more about local storage and data retrieval/parsing. We also learned more about how to collaborate simultaneously on github, as well as dividing up work into smaller subsections that each person can work on.

What's next for Senior Savings

Completing places API integration (with funding) Expanding beyond activities and general stores. (more categories) Getting contracts and partnerships with other companies and non-profits to support our vision.
