Inspiration: To create a voice skill with a minimal learning curve, simple and easy interface for senior citizens to interact with and be able to leverage the advanced features of an Alexa skill.

What it does: Our skill captures a number of service and information requests that are typical or can be modified to suit the daily needs of an independent senior citizen employing care services. These include, physical/medication assistance, service requests and information inquiries. The care service provider can customize the skill's content to suit their care recipients special needs. The care providers can also manage 2-way communications between themselves and their care recipients on our custom companion app. For example, they can notify their customers on the status of their services requests or on how soon an in-person care provider can reach their rooms or homes.

How we built it

We leveraged our VoiceWorx no-code platform which we built to enable anyone develop Alexa skills and deploy to their alexa developer console account for certification and publishing. Our VoiceWorx platform was built to natively integrate with the alexa developer console on one end and to connect with a number of enterprise datasources on the other end. The platform is also able to integrate with any REST api service, giving us expansive flexibility.

Challenges we ran into

Understanding cross cutting tasks and needs that could be addressed by a conversational ai solution and how to design it on an Alexa Skill seniors. Training the skill to capture the myriad of phrases that both our senior citizen users and their care givers may use to call up general functions within the skill. Designing a user friendly interface for elderly users to engage by voice and touch screen icons.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Utilizing APL to design a user friendly and icon based skill navigation menu for elderly users. Getting a healthcare related skill passed the Alexa skill certification process.

What we learned

Sticking to business functionality of the skill and not confusing our potential users with technical details. How to optimize natural interactions by user and application in a voice and touch screen interface.

What's next for Senior Living Assistant Alexa Skill

We are currently reaching out and engaging with Senior Living, Managed Care and other related facilities to get them to try out our skill with their residents.
