Inspiration
Watching aging family members struggle to maintain a consistent fitness routine—or simply not know where to start—highlighted a widespread issue in our community. Many older adults want to stay active, but struggle with complex fitness apps or unclear guidance. I wanted to build a straightforward tool that makes evidence-based physical activity simple, safe, and accessible for seniors.
What it does
Senior Fitness Scheduler is a dual-purpose activity tracker designed around the CDC's physical activity guidelines for older adults. The app features high-contrast visual guides, oversized timers, and simplified scheduling tools. By making physical wellness digitally accessible to an often-overlooked demographic, the project directly aligns with UN SDG 3 (Good Health & Well-being) and UN SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
How I built it
The project was developed using Next.js for the core frontend logic and interactive UI. After building and testing the web application, I packaged it into an Android APK to allow native installation on mobile devices.
Challenges we ran into
Accessible UI Design: Designing for seniors required stripping away modern, cluttered UI trends in favor of high-contrast text, large touch targets, and clear navigation paths.
Feature Integration: Implementing a reliable emergency call/alert button took several iterations to ensure it triggered correctly without accidental taps.
Curating Content: Researching and selecting low-impact, CDC-compliant exercises required careful filtering to ensure user safety.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Developed a fully functional web application and successfully cross-compiled it into an error-free Android APK.
Created a working prototype that genuinely addresses a real-world community need with practical utility.
What I learned
This project gave me hands-on experience bridging web and mobile development through Next.js and Android packaging. Beyond technical skills, it reinforced the importance of user-centric design—building for accessibility requires questioning standard design assumptions at every step.
What's next for Senior Fitness Scheduler
iOS Support: Cross-compiling and optimizing the build for iOS devices.
Expanded Exercise Library: Partnering with physical health resources to offer a wider variety of low-impact routines.
UI Refinements: Gathering direct user feedback from local seniors to further optimize font sizing, button placements, and audio cues.
