Wink - making your posts, a ghost!
Our idea started when we used to "like" the posts put by our friends, long back. It's sort of like, past haunting them and we used to mock them with updates and statuses which they posted ,say 4 or 5 years back. We thought that it would be good to have a lifetime for every update we post in FB, for instance if you post that its raining, it would rain for an hour or so. After a day, that post has no significance. So we decided to hack this problem out.
Initially we targeted our app to any end user, but after the discussion with our mentor, we found a huge opportunity for this app among enterprise customers like Flipkart or KFC who used to give away short term deals which might last for not more than a day.
Our app has the following parts,
- A chrome extension which injects itself on facebook pages so that user can comfortably post "timed" posts simply from facebook itself.
- A chrome plugin which showcases the details about the posts made in the past including hit-rate and some useful analytics(planned).
- A third party facebook application built using FB-PHP-SDK which takes care of status posting part and cronjob for automatic deletion.
Key Features of our app includes,
Specifying deadline for every status to be deleted. If status has any links, the hit rate for that link will be noted by having a redirect through our website. Automated cronjob for deleting the expired posts. Limited analytic about the post ( a lot planned, but not enough time to debug) seamless posting of "timed" posts directly from your facebook profile. No separate login credentials needed. Facebook OAuth is used for authentication.
Technologies used,
PHP for webserver backend along with FB-PHP-SDK. Chrome Extensions and Plugin developed using JavaScripts. Front end UI using CSS and HTML. JavaScript libraries like jQuery and Fusioncharts.js are used.
A lot of plannings were done about analytic for the posts, posted via Wink. But since time were a constrain, it was pretty hard to debug every part of the app. We got a basic version working fine.
We faced hardships in many places like, making a way to communicate a chrome extension with chrome plugin, fetching number of likes and comments for a personal post (for posts by flagged pages like facebook or inmobi, its easy. No proper documentation about personal post).
