Searching through scattered department notices, sifting through outdated emails, or endlessly scrolling through platforms like Shoreline can be time-consuming and inefficient. But what if you could streamline this process? What if you could discover seminars that truly fit your interests and career aspirations, all with minimal effort?

Enter SeminarSurf.

We’ve created a one-stop platform designed to eliminate the hassle of seminar discovery and organization. SeminarSurf empowers you to easily navigate UCSB’s academic seminar landscape, saving you time and energy while ensuring that you never miss an event relevant to your academic and career goals.

Seminar Hosting Made Simple: Hosting a seminar or workshop at UCSB is easier than ever with SeminarSurf. Our platform offers a user-friendly form to submit your seminar details, and—no more manual follow-ups with event coordinators! SeminarSurf auto-generates an email PDF and that can be sent directly to the appropriate event coordinator, streamlining the administrative process and giving you more time to focus on your seminar content.

Smarter Recommendations, Tailored to You: We understand that attending seminars is not just about showing up—it’s about advancing your career, expanding your knowledge, and pursuing your passions. That’s why SeminarSurf goes beyond simply listing events. Our intelligent recommendation engine suggests seminars and workshops based on your career path interests. Just upload your resume, and SeminarSurf analyzes your experience to suggest the seminars you should consider. Each recommendation comes with a tailored reason, ensuring that the event is not only relevant but also a valuable next step in your academic journey.

My Events: Track and Organize: The “My Events” feature lets you store all the seminars you’ve hosted, attended, or aspire to join. Keep track of your progress and seamlessly manage your schedule all in one place. Whether you’re planning your own event or discovering new opportunities, “My Events” ensures that every seminar is just a click away.

Overcoming Data Challenges

The journey to building SeminarSurf wasn’t without its challenges. Our biggest hurdle was the scarcity of consistent seminar data. To overcome this, we webscraped various sources, including Shoreline, the UCSB Data Science Activity list, and a range of departmental seminar pages. Unfortunately, the data we found was often inconsistent or incomplete. In response, we turned to OpenAI’s API, leveraging advanced natural language processing models to clean, structure, and analyze seminar data. We also prompted directly to the LLM to get the recommendation system.

What’s Next

As three beginners, we know that our work is very crude, but we envision SeminarSurf as more than just a tool to find seminars—it’s a personalized, intuitive experience that evolves with your academic and career trajectory. In the future, we plan to integrate features like a robust seminar review system, more personalized seminar recommendations based on your learning goals, and even AI-assisted scheduling to make your academic seminar experience as seamless as possible.

Ultimately, we hope to position SeminarSurf as the ultimate alternative to Shoreline, providing an easier, smarter, and more personalized way for Gauchos to navigate seminars and workshops. Whether you're looking to improve your skills, learn about emerging fields, or find inspiration for your next big project, SeminarSurf will be there to guide you.
