Inspiration

Traditional seating relies entirely on rigid structural frames, often resulting in fixed pressure points and static posture. Inspired by magnetic levitation and tensegrity structures, this project set out to reimagine modern furniture—combining physical principles to build a semi-levitating chair that offers a weightless, dynamic seating experience.

What it does

The semi-levitating chair provides a floating seating surface that absorbs movement and adjusts flexibly under load. By balancing physical support mechanisms with dynamic suspension, it reduces static pressure on the spine and delivers an ergonomic, cloud-like sitting feel without sacrificing safety or structural integrity.

How we built it

*Frame & Structure: Fabricated a high-strength chassis designed to handle weight distribution and balance points. *Levitation Mechanism: Integrated targeted magnetic balance arrays and tension elements to maintain a floating equilibrium under load. *Testing & Tuning: Iterated through multiple weight-distribution tests to fine-tune pivot balance and avoid tipping.

Challenges we ran into

The primary hurdle was managing lateral stability while maintaining the floating effect. Achieving a smooth levitation feel without letting the chair wobble required exact alignment of magnets/tension points and continuous structural re-balancing during testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

*Successfully constructed a stable prototype capable of supporting a human user in semi-levitation. *Balanced complex physics mechanisms into a functional, aesthetically modern piece of furniture.

What we learned

We gained deep hands-on experience in load distribution, magnetic balance dynamics, structural frame mechanics, and rapid prototyping under physical constraints.

What's next for Semi-Levitating Chair

*Active Stabilization System: Integrating microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino/ESP32) and electromagnets to dynamically adjust balancing force in real time based on user weight and movement. *Ergonomic Smart Sensors: Adding embedded sensors to track sitting posture, weight distribution, and usage duration, providing feedback via a companion app. *Production & Scalability: Refining the structural frame with lighter, high-strength composite materials to prepare the design for manufacturing and modular consumer assembly.
