Inspiration

College students are often “too busy” to take care of their mental, emotional, and physical well-being. This is a serious problem because due to the high correspondence between mental and physical health, a conscious focus on one’s well being through self care is very essential, especially for college students who are statistically facing concerning levels of mental illness. We think that self-care doesn't have to take a lot of time, which is why our app is based on providing activities based on how much time the user has, ranging from 5 minutes to an hour or more. Also, a lot of students struggle with what exactly consists of "self care," so our goal is to provide a set of pre-selected activities to choose from for those students, as well as the option to enter in your own activities, to create an overall efficient self-care process.

What it does

SelfCare allows the user to keep track of all areas of their "self care" in one app (mental, emotional, physical). The number of hearts you have on the home page represents your “health” for the week based on the combined number of mental, emotional, and physical care activities you have completed. Every time you open up the app, you are prompted with six time options for how long you want to spend on your self care at that time. The app provides clear lists of possible activities separated based on how much time the student has on a particular day/occasion, and each activity allows the user to enter information about the specific instance of the activity, similar to a journal entry, and stores previous completed instances of the activity for future reference.

How we built it

We continuously cycled through Geetanshi prototyping the app using Adobe XD and Danji coding it using XCode, and both of us discussing each other's processes and ideas about the design and implementation.

Challenges we ran into

Since it was our first time using XCode, some of the designs were too difficult to implement, but we worked around it by altering the design for into a more minimalistic implementation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're very proud of the design and the fact that we were able to put something together in XCode despite never having used it before, as well as the complexity and detail in our prototyping.

What we learned

We learned that it takes a lot of time to prototype an app, and that there's a lot of back and forth between coding and prototyping once the coding begins and you start to realize what works and what doesn't in code.

What's next for SelfCare

We would love to finish coding our app to provide the full functionality that we planned out in our prototype, as well as edit the design to match the prototype.
