Inspiration

As girls, we have had personal experiences of feeling anxious while walking around campus when it’s dark out and when we feel uncomfortable or unsafe in certain situations. We hope that this application will be able to provide some sense of security knowing that help is just a click away, just in case things go south.

What it does

The application is simply designed to just have one main function: text a number of your choosing your current location as quickly as possible. Upon clicking the alert button, iMessage opens and a customized message calling for help is written for you. Just click send, and your chosen contact will receive the message!

How we built it

We designed the interface and overall idea first using Figma, before we delved into the technical aspect. We used XCode Storyboard to build the app and coded the backend of the project ourselves using Swift, including connecting to the text messaging system.

Challenges we ran into

We first tried to implement our code on VS Code, using the Taipy library, but we found that with the time constraint, it was difficult to use Python. As such, we shifted to using XCode Storyboard since some team members had experience with it and it was easier to use to design the user interface. Additionally, we ran into errors while trying to implement the message sending the location to the person.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our idea and how far we have come since 24 hours ago. We worked well as a team despite all being brand new Hackathoners and collaborated efficiently to come up with the overall logistics of our application. We became stuck at quite a few points during the process, but we pushed through each time. We are proud of the new sisterhoods we have created and our community as well.

What we learned

We developed our skills in XCode, including how to make a dynamic background that is scrolling-friendly, with buttons that allow phone notifications to be sent to associated contacts. We also grown significantly in our soft skills including team collaboration and conflict resolution.

What's next for SafeCircle

We want to officially launch our app to the App Store with additional features such as making the location to be displayed on a map. We can also make the message to be sent out customizable depending on what the user wants to send. Additionally, we can implement other features such as safety articles and recommendations in the app to give users more help.
