Inspiration
Covid changed the face of education and while students were able to adapt to the times academic-wise, the social aspect of undergraduate life left much to be desired. Being UofT students who have endured this, we recognized this as a real issue and decided to try and create a simple platform that can allow students to post about themselves while also finding other people with similar tastes and talents!
What it does
The website offers two functionalities: seek and post. You can either post a short description with tags, or search posts by description or tags. Seeker offers a simple way for students to seek the people they want to meet.
How we built it
We built it using normal web programming languages: HTML, CSS, and Javascript. We used Firebase as the website's database and host.
Challenges we ran into
We had a bit of a challenge connecting the website to a database, and hosting it with firebase. The documentation does not cover everything and we had to do a lot of research plus trialing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Since this is our first hackathon, we were enthusiastic to build something wonderful, yet we wanted to ensure that we keep it simple and within the scope of the whole team. Thus, we are not only proud that we were able to create a complete project but also a project that can benefit the larger community!
What we learned
I think we all gained a bit of insight into teamwork and planning, as well as some new knowledge about building websites. Specifically, I think we learnt to set a reachable goal, also to distribute the workload evenly among group members to speed up the process of developing.
What's next for Seeker
The next step for seekers is to implement the user register and login features. And that will lead to the user profile features, where each user can update their personal information such as introduction and interest, and skills. Also, users will be able to follow and chat with other users. As a result, Seeker will be more useful as a networking platform.
