Inspiration
We were inspired by the QR codes on our IDs. We initially started off thinking of ways we could incorporate this unique identification into an interactive game. Later, we pivoted a bit from using the QR codes but still decided upon an interactive game that a large number of people could play together–a scavenger hunt.
What it does
Users start off by creating an account to save their score. A riddle is then displayed on the screen—the user will have to determine the answer to the riddle and take a picture of the object that is the answer. If they solved the riddle correctly and took a picture of the right object, they would be awarded a point and get a new riddle to solve.
How we built it
We used react native for our app. Users signing up will be entered into a database where they can be authenticated each time they enter the app. We used Cohere’s generate API to then generate riddles for the user to answer. The user will follow the description of the object and take a picture. Using react-native’s inbuilt vision features and a SQL database, we determine if the user receives points for the find.
Challenges we ran into
Due to react native’s nature being asynchronous, we were unable to predict any of our forthcoming problems. From promises due to fetches to human error, we made many mistakes far and wide that eventually led us to not being able to finish this project. Additionally, we spent way too much time thinking of an idea, and by the time we went to a mentor for an idea, it was already too late to start a meaningful project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
First off, we are proud of ourselves for making the trek out to Hack the North from New Jersey! It's been an amazing experience which we will cherish.
What we learned
Aside from all of the unforgettable memories, much was learned from this trip. It was my entire group’s first time flying alone, and we were so focused on the excitement that we all forgot about the preparations. We did not plan at all. From not knowing what to pack until the list was sent by email, from us not thinking about the sponsorships and how they could affect us, it made us more than ever aware of all the difficulties one can come across during a hackathon, especially one of this sort. However, we all do now feel very prepared and are very hopeful for what we might be able to accomplish next year!
What's next for Seek a Peek
Although we had many plans for Seek a Peek, many of them, including the game whatsoever, could not be accomplished at all due to time. As per usual with anyone, time is one’s biggest enemy, and it seems that we forget that fact very quickly. When we leave Hack the North either today or tomorrow, we plan to finally finish the game and include all of the functions we originally planned for the app, like teams and a leaderboard, along with including technologies like Cohere and CockroachDB.
