Inspiration

SeeFood was inspired by a night out at an Italian restaurant with friends. We were excited to try new dishes but found ourselves lost in a sea of unfamiliar names like "Carpaccio di Polpo" and "Pici all’Aglione." After 20 minutes of scrolling through Google images, we still weren’t sure what we were ordering—and when the food arrived, it was nothing like what we’d expected. That night, we realized there had to be a better way to explore new cuisines without feeling clueless or disappointed. SeeFood was created to make dining out easier, more fun, and a little more adventurous, whether you’re a foodie or just trying something new.

Our Vision

We want to turn dining into an experience of discovery and delight, not guesswork and frustration. SeeFood is all about helping diners feel confident in their choices by showing them exactly what they're ordering and sharing the story behind each dish. Our vision is to make 1000000 people trying new foods exciting and worry-free—like having a knowledgeable friend at your side who knows all the best dishes.

How SeeFood Works

Step-by-Step Experience

  1. Snap a Photo: Take a picture of any menu with your phone’s camera.
  2. Get the Details: SeeFood scans the image and instantly recognizes dish names and descriptions.
  3. See What You’re Ordering: The app matches each dish with real photos from the restaurant, ensuring what you see is what you get.
  4. Learn the Backstory: Discover more about the dishes you’re curious about, including their origins, ingredients, and cultural significance.

Behind the Scenes

The Technology

  • Optical Character Recognition (OCR): Turns menu photos into readable text in seconds.
  • Structured Json LLM: New Cheap, fast, accurate model that parses all dishes within the menu
  • Location Matching: Uses your location to find images specific to the restaurant you’re visiting.
  • React Native: Used to develop the app cross-platform, enabling us to publish SeeFood on the App Store and make it accessible on both iOS(currently) and Android devices(really soon!). technology

  • Google Maps API: Locates the restaurant to find authentic dish images.
  • Google Search API: Default fall back in case there's no food picture directly from restaurant.
  • Firebase: Stores user information and restaurant dish information to save api costs
