Inspiration
I grew up watching elders in my village play Ayo – a game of strategy and community. I wanted to bring that spirit to Reddit: a campaign where your faction fights to lead the village.
What it does
SeedClash is an Ayo board game campaign. You play as The Subreddit, battling four AI champions (Aṣírí → Àgbà → Ọ̀gá → Olóyè). Sow seeds, capture pits, and adapt to each opponent’s style. Unlock the Babalawo Core (3 uses/game) for tactical advice, earn achievements, and climb the leaderboard. Defeat all four to claim the crown.
How we built it
Built on Devvit Web with React, Tailwind, TRPC, and Redis. The board and AI are client‑side; Redis stores stats, leaderboards, and daily challenges. Each AI has unique weights, making the final opponent genuinely tough. Menu action is declarative via Hono endpoint.
Challenges we ran into
Menu action failing – fixed by switching to declarative approach. Responsive layout clipping on desktop – solved with h-full max-h-[100dvh] and adjusted padding. AI difficulty balancing – iterated weights until each champion felt distinct and progressively harder.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Full campaign with 4 distinct AI opponents.
- Babalawo Core – limited‑use advisor.
- Hand‑sowing animations, cowrie visuals, and sound effects.
- Achievements, daily challenges, leaderboards (backend ready). 4.Polished responsive UI that fits Reddit posts. ## What we learned How to build inside Reddit’s ecosystem – custom post types, Redis, TRPC, and responsive design. Most importantly, games become communities when players have things to share and compete over. ## What's next for SeedClash Display leaderboards and daily challenges on splash.
User‑generated content – share replay codes / !challenge comments.
More champions, seasonal bosses, custom skins.
Weekly tournaments with special flair rewards.
