Inspiration
We were inspired by a few games, including Plague Inc. and Stardew Valley, games that have achieved critical acclaim for their excellence in being video games while also raising awareness for issues that otherwise wouldn't be as noticed by the general public.
What it does
Seedfall is an online multiplayer strategy game centered around battling deforestation.
How we built it
We built the game in Unity, using C# to write custom scripts that manage our game. We also hosted our game and repository via Github, and used Copilot to assist in designing the scripts for our game.
Challenges we ran into
We had trouble configuring Github, with some members having never tackled a project this big in Github. We also had inconsistent coding standards, and were unable to complete the multiplayer functionality before the submission deadline.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
For our first hackathon, we're proud we managed to get across the finish line and create a quality product that we hope stands out amongst our peers. We're also proud of building something we think can create positive impact on the world, even if it's just one person playing and learning.
What we learned
We learned that we should coordinate coding standards beforehand, and to more firmly outline our plans for our projects before beginning work.
What's next for Seedfall
If developed further, we would hope to expand the gameplay, partner with real life organizations, and potentially gear the game for a release on major digital platforms, with a portion of the profits being donated to charities that fight deforestation.
