Inspiration
Most multiplayer games focus on competition, speed, or individual progression. We wanted to explore a different question: what if an entire Reddit community could slowly uncover the history of a forgotten civilization together?
Sediment was inspired by the excitement of archaeological discoveries, the collaborative storytelling that naturally happens on Reddit, and the idea that every player's small contribution could become part of something much larger. Instead of chasing high scores, players work together to excavate artifacts, preserve history, and build a living museum whose story is written by the community itself.
Our goal was to create a game that only makes sense on Reddit—a persistent experience where discovery, discussion, and collaboration are the core gameplay mechanics.
What it does
Sediment is a persistent community archaeology game where players collaborate to excavate the remains of a forgotten civilization.
Every day, a new excavation layer becomes available. Players carefully remove sand and debris using different archaeological tools, uncover ancient artifacts, restore damaged relics, decipher inscriptions, and contribute stories that become part of the artifact's official museum record.
The community collectively builds:
- A persistent excavation site
- A living museum
- A growing civilization timeline
- Community-written artifact lore
- Seasonal archaeological expeditions
Every excavation permanently contributes to the shared history of the civilization.
How we built it
Sediment combines modern web technologies with real-time multiplayer systems to create a smooth, collaborative experience.

AI
We use Generative AI to:
- Generate civilization histories
- Interpret ancient inscriptions
- Enhance community-written lore
- Create museum summaries while preserving player contributions
The application follows a modular architecture with reusable components, shared types, responsive UI, accessibility features, and production-ready deployment workflows.
Challenges we ran into
Designing an experience that felt genuinely collaborative rather than simply multiplayer was the biggest challenge.
We spent significant time balancing excavation mechanics so every player could meaningfully contribute without allowing individual actions to dominate community progress.
Other challenges included:
- Designing satisfying excavation physics
- Building persistent community progression
- Creating an intuitive museum experience
- Balancing tool risk and reward
- Supporting real-time updates
- Maintaining responsive performance while rendering interactive excavation scenes
- Ensuring AI enhanced creativity without replacing community storytelling
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're especially proud that Sediment feels like a Reddit-native experience instead of simply being a game hosted on Reddit.
Highlights include:
- Persistent community excavation
- Interactive archaeology gameplay
- Physics-based excavation mechanics
- Living museum with permanent discoveries
- AI-assisted historical interpretation
- Community-written artifact lore
- Beautiful immersive UI inspired by archaeological expeditions
- Modular, scalable architecture ready for future expansion
Most importantly, every player's contribution permanently becomes part of the civilization's history.
What we learned
Building Sediment taught us that community-driven experiences are most engaging when players feel ownership over the world they help create.
We also learned the importance of balancing:
- Individual progression with community goals
- AI assistance with player creativity
- Visual polish with gameplay depth
- Persistent systems with approachable onboarding
Creating systems that encourage collaboration instead of competition resulted in a more meaningful and memorable experience.
What's next for Sediment: Unearth. Restore. Remember.
Our vision extends far beyond the hackathon prototype.
Future plans include:
- Multiple civilizations with unique archaeological themes
- Cross-community expeditions
- Dynamic world events
- Seasonal excavations
- Rare legendary discoveries
- Advanced artifact restoration
- Procedurally generated ruins
- Community-built museums with customizable exhibitions
- Richer AI-powered historical reconstruction
- Mobile support
- Enhanced accessibility features
- Live global excavation events where thousands of players uncover history together
We believe Sediment can evolve into a long-term community experience where every excavation uncovers not just artifacts, but stories that players create together.
