Inspiration

The sharp rise in cyberattacks—up by 75% in the past year—highlighted the urgent need for accessible personal security tools. While organizations have robust defenses, individuals are often left vulnerable to phishing scams, password breaches, and login anomalies. This motivated us to create SecureSphere, a browser extension that empowers users to protect their digital footprint directly from their devices.

What it does

SecureSphere is a browser extension focused on improving personal cybersecurity with three core features:

  1. Password Breach Detection: Warns users if their passwords have been compromised by scanning them against breach databases like Have I Been Pwned.
  2. Login Anomaly Detection: Monitors login attempts for unusual patterns, such as delays or repeated failures. When suspicious behavior is detected, the tool initiates defensive actions.
  3. Phishing Detection: Allows users to check if the website they’re visiting is safe by analyzing the URL in real time using trusted API , helping them avoid phishing traps.

How we built it

SecureSphere was built using:

  • Frontend: JavaScript, HTML, and CSS for an intuitive interface.
  • Backend: APIs for password breach detection and phishing analysis.
  • Machine Learning: Random Forest algorithms for detecting suspicious login behaviors.
  • Security Practices: Secure storage to protect user data.

Challenges we ran into

  • Phishing Detection Accuracy: Balancing real-time analysis with minimal false positives required extensive testing and algorithm optimization.
  • Privacy Concerns: Designing privacy-first features that analyze data.
  • API Integration: Ensuring smooth performance while using multiple APIs was technically challenging.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Developing a real-time phishing detection mechanism.
  • Creating a user-friendly yet secure password breach detection system.
  • Designing an intuitive tool that combines simplicity with robust security measures.

What we learned

  • The complexities of implementing real-time cybersecurity solutions.
  • How to design privacy-first tools without compromising on functionality.
  • The importance of balancing security features with a user-friendly experience.

What's next for SecureSphere

  • Enhance phishing detection with improved algorithms.
  • Expand to mobile platforms for comprehensive security.
  • Introduce proactive features like password rotation reminders and a security insights dashboard.

SecureSphere is a step toward making cybersecurity accessible to everyone, enabling users to take control of their online safety with confidence.
