Inspiration

Digital scams are growing faster than awareness, from pensioners losing their grants to informal traders being tricked with fake proof-of-payments.
We were inspired by seeing real people lose money and trust simply because technology moved faster than understanding.
We wanted to build something human-centered, lightweight, and impactful — a solution that protects users while empowering them with digital literacy, financial confidence, and inclusive tools. Secure Africa is our vision of a safer, fairer financial ecosystem: where no one is tricked out of their hard-earned money, where knowledge travels as fast as scams, and where technology serves people, not the other way around.

What it does

Secure Africa is a mobile-friendly, AI-powered platform that detects scams, secures payments, and educates communities.
Key features include:

  • AI Scam Detector: Users paste suspicious messages; our AI flags scams instantly.
  • Trusted Contact System: Vulnerable users (elders, youth, anyone unsure) can link a guardian who is notified when potential scams appear — without compromising privacy.
  • Secure Lite for Traders: Generates safe, traceable payment links or QR codes, so informal traders can confidently receive payments.
  • Education Hub: Fun, visual, and audio-based lessons on scams and financial literacy, with quizzes in English, isiZulu, Afrikaans, and Swahili.
  • Low Data & Offline Functionality: Designed for rural users with limited internet access.

How we built it

Secure Africa is a progressive web prototype combining AI, fintech, and education.
We used:

  • HTML, CSS, JavaScript for fast, responsive UI.
  • Lightweight AI algorithms for real-time scam detection.
  • Text-to-speech functionality for accessibility.
  • Multilingual support for inclusivity.

The platform is intuitive, works offline where possible, and is accessible even to first-time smartphone users.

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing an offline-friendly platform while integrating AI, multilingual, and voice features.
  • Making the trusted contact system both protective and privacy-conscious.
  • Balancing simplicity for first-time users with the power of advanced features.
  • Ensuring the informal trader payment system is secure, traceable, and low-data.

What's next for Secure Africa

  • Integrate real payment gateways for immediate trader transactions.
  • Expand voice-enabled scam detection for elders and users who struggle to type.
  • Partner with banks, NGOs, and telecoms to reach more communities.
  • Train AI on real-world scams to improve detection accuracy.
  • Scale the platform to empower every African, making Secure Africa the digital guardian for payments, financial literacy, and community safety.
