Inspiration
Fast party games are fun because they create instant pressure, laughter, and “one more round” energy. I wanted to bring that feeling into Reddit as a daily ritual: same challenge for everyone, same order, and a live leaderboard.
What It Does
Seconds Game is a daily 10-second prompt sprint.
- Every day has 50 prompts.
- Every player gets the same daily prompt sequence.
- For each prompt, players must name 3 valid items in 10 seconds.
- Correct answer => next prompt.
- First miss or timeout => run ends.
- Ranked mode is once per day per user.
- Practice mode is unlimited and does not affect leaderboard.
The game also shows “Today inspired by” subreddits, so daily prompt packs feel fresh and connected to Reddit’s daily pulse.
How I Built It
- Devvit Web app with custom Reddit post UI
- TypeScript + Vite frontend
- Express server on Devvit
- Redis for run state, daily gating, leaderboard, and caching
- OpenAI Responses API for:
- daily prompt generation from Reddit trend signals
- semantic answer judging for open-ended inputs
Challenges
- Balancing strict vs fun judging for open-ended answers
- Keeping latency low between submit and next prompt
- Making a timed UI work smoothly on mobile (small viewport + keyboard)
- Preserving fairness (same daily prompts/order for everyone)
What I Learned
- AI judging needs game-specific guardrails, not just generic correctness
- UX details matter a lot in timed games (focus, scroll, compact layout)
- Caching/versioning strategy is critical for reliable daily content pipelines
What’s Next
- Better anti-abuse checks
- Richer post-run breakdowns and streak analytics
- Themed daily packs and moderator controls for prompt sources/difficulty
