Inspiration
Most productivity tools feel like heavy corporate software. They demand accounts, endless setup, complex project boards, and live timers that make you feel like you're constantly at work. We wanted to build the exact opposite: a quiet, ultra-lightweight tool that simply answers the question, "What did I actually do today, and exactly when did I do it?" No fluff, no tracking, and absolute privacy.
What it does
SecondLog is a minimalist, single-screen dashboard for logging your tasks down to the exact second.
- Add a task: Drop in a title, an optional description, and a start/end date and time.
- Review your history: View everything in a clean, dark, distraction-free list sorted by newest first.
- Edit or delete: Fix mistakes inline or clear out entries easily.
- Export anywhere: Download your entire history as a JSON or CSV file whenever you want.
How we built it
We built SecondLog using Next.js (App Router), React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS. Because it's entirely "local-first," there is no database or backend server. Everything you type is saved securely inside your browser's localStorage, meaning it survives page refreshes while never leaving your computer. We blocked all network requests to ensure it physically cannot "phone home."
Challenges we ran into
Handling exact dates and times without timezone bugs or invalid inputs (like trying to log February 30th) was tricky. We spent a good amount of time writing robust validation logic in our helper files (app/lib/entries.ts) to ensure that tasks can't end before they start, while still allowing things like crossing midnight smoothly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- True Privacy by Design: We didn't just promise privacy; we enforced it. There are zero fetch requests, zero cookies, zero analytics, and security headers built right into the config.
- Blazing Fast UX: Because there's no server lag, adding, editing, or exporting your logs happens instantly.
- Aesthetic Minimalism: We managed to create a dark-themed, tabular UI that feels calm and professional rather than overwhelming.
What we learned
We learned the sheer power of constraint. By deliberately deciding what not to include (no live stopwatches, no team accounts, no tags, no charts), we were able to build a tool that does one single thing exceptionally well, staying lightning-fast and tiny in codebase size.
What's next for SecondLog
SecondLog is intentionally complete as it is—a small, finished utility. Future improvements might include keyboard shortcuts for ultra-quick logging, or optional encrypted backups for users who want to sync their local files across multiple machines manually.
