Americans lost $7.9 billion to investment scams in 2025* as the largest FTC fraud category. Every day, We kept seeing the same pattern: fake firms, cloned websites, fake testimonials, too-good-to-be-true returns. By the time someone Googles the firm, it’s too late. We wanted protection that works before you click.
What it does
Second Opinion is a browser extension that silently monitors your browser. Open a suspicious email or a Robinhood stock page and it instantly runs two agents: A Fraud Detector that cross-checks the firm against FINRA BrokerCheck, RDAP domain age, and official contact records and a Stock Researcher that pulls price history, dividends, volatility, and red flags. If you want to buy, it shows a checkout preview with no order ever placed. The final decision is always yours.
How we built it
Coded with the help of AI-assisted development, FastAPI backend with four specialized AI agents, a Chrome extension for context capture, a Next.js dashboard, and Capital One’s Nessie sandbox for demo fund transfers. Each role owned a vertical slice which includes fraud, stock data, dashboard, and extension that is the building against shared fixture contracts so nobody blocked anyone else.
