Inspiration

We frequently donate our unwanted clothes to charity bins, but have difficulty locating charity bins as they do not appear on Google Maps or on other websites that claim to be charity bin finders. Furthermore, charity bins typically only accept specific types of items, (for example, some charity bins only accept clothing), and hence, this makes it even harder to find the charity bins that will take in your unwanted items.

What it does

Our app locates and shows users the closest charity bin to their location or any desired location that will accept the items that they wish to donate. The user first searches for the type of item they want to get rid of, and then enters an address. The app will then locate the relevant charity bins within the area. It will also display information about the charity that the bin belongs to so that users can find a bin supporting a cause that they are interested in.

How we built it

We modelled the user interface of the app on Figma.

Challenges we ran into

Our group was not able to properly implement the app as we lack the relevant technical knowledge and expertise needed to build apps (all of our team members have only done introductory level back-end development in Python).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of what we were able to create on Figma to model the user interface of our app. We were also able to model the user interactions. We tried our best to do what we could with the time provided and with our current skillset.

What we learned

We learned how to use Figma to design user interface. We also researched data structures such as k-d trees in an attempt to implement our idea in Python, although we could not execute this. Through this hackathon, we learned more about ideation, brainstorming and narrowing down the options to decide on the most viable and executable idea.

What's next for Second Life

We hope to be able to implement the app once we upskill and gain more experience in app development and front-end development.
