Inspiration
Libraries often have many seats, but students still waste time walking around looking for an available seat. At busy hours, some seats may also remain blocked by reservations or belongings even when they are not actively being used.
We wanted to solve this problem by creating a smart system that makes library seating easier, faster, and more efficient.
What the project does
SeatWise is a Smart Library Seat Allocation System that allows students to view real-time seat availability, choose or receive a recommended seat, reserve it, and manage their reservation.
The system also provides a library administrator with an overview of seat occupancy and utilization, helping identify crowded areas and improve the use of available library space.
The key idea is not just seat booking, but intelligent seat allocation based on factors such as availability, preferred zone, charging-point availability, window preference, and other student requirements.
How it works
1.A student opens the SeatWise application. 2.The student views the library's seat map. 3.Available, occupied, and reserved seats are displayed with different statuses. 4.The student can select preferences such as a quiet zone, window seat, or charging point. 5.The smart allocation system evaluates available seats and recommends a suitable option. 6.The student reserves the recommended seat. 7.The reservation can be checked in and later released when the student leaves. 8.The administrator can monitor overall library occupancy and seat utilization.
What makes it smart
Instead of treating every available seat equally, SeatWise assigns a suitability score to available seats based on student preferences and seat characteristics.
For example, if a student prefers a quiet area with a charging point, the system prioritizes available seats matching those requirements. This makes the system more personalized and helps distribute students efficiently across the library.
Challenges
As a solo project, one of the main challenges is designing a system that is simple enough for students to use while still providing useful intelligent allocation.
Another challenge is representing real-time seat availability and handling situations such as expired reservations, missed check-ins, and seats becoming available again.
Future scope
The system can be extended with QR-based check-in, automatic reservation expiry, IoT-based occupancy sensors, usage analytics, personalized recommendations based on previous choices, notifications, and predictive analysis of peak library hours.
