Inspiration
Have you ever wanted to go to a Bryant Park movie screening, only to be scared away by the prospect of not finding a spot? Have you considered finding someone to line up for you, but hesitated to use a paid service, for any reasons? Conversely, have you considered going to an event but couldn't find anyone to go with you? Offer to hold spots for friends of friends!
What it does
Seat Sentinel lets people save seats for others -- and get a reward in the form of a small item: a beer, a sandwich, a drink later. It makes better use of people's availability while fostering social interaction. Because it's based on Facebook, Seat Sentinel helps you join your friends' friends without feeling awkward. User Journey: 1) You found an event to go to, but don't know any friends going. But their friends are going. 2) Without seeming like a creep, you can find 2nd degree connections who are going or interested in going to the event with our Facebook integration. 3) You can input what you are willing to offer (beer) or what reward you would like; other details include the number of seats you can save or need. 4) If there is a match, you will connect and begin messaging with a 2nd degree friend.
How we built it
We used express.js and Node.js for the back-end, and plain HTML/CSS at the front. We assigned two models, a Seat-warmer and a Seat-seeker, allowed them to sign up for Facebook-listed events, and gave them the possibility of finding seat holding opportunities by FB events.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into issues with Facebook's increased privacy settings for events; plans to show FB events on a map went nowhere. We had issues connecting our index page to the seat-warmer and seat-seeker sign-up pages -- we had to use HTML mockups.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We pushed through a seemingly endless series of technical issues, mostly caused by ourselves. We weathered the departure of two team members and a dangerous bout of somnolence after ingesting the world's best tacos (THANK YOU!!!!)
What we learned
That we learn even by failing; that working in pairs is effective for learning.
What's next for SEAT SENTINEL
Getting the register and display functions to work. Extend the app beyond the Facebook universe. Expand our definition of "perks" to include goods and services provided by the event venue
