Inspiration
"Seasonal Pickings" is a web-application that aims to promote healthy eating habits and the use of locally-sourced food. Locally-sourced food supports local farmers, reduces carbon footprint, and provides more nutritious options for consumers. We believe the app has the potential to make a difference in promoting healthy eating habits and supporting local businesses.
What it does
The app includes a game that challenges children to identify and locate seasonal produce for recipes, with real recipes provided for parents to use. It also showcases local sellers of locally sourced food, making it easier for families to make sustainable decisions.
How we built it
We split into a game-development, design and data collection, and web-development team. For game-development we used Construct3 which is a HTML5-based game making software. Design used Vectornator, an iPad app. Web-development involved a React-based front-end, paired with a JSON server for the back-end. We combined all three elements to create one web-app, collaborating when needed throughout the night, and bringing all the elements together at the end of the Hackathon.
Challenges we ran into
Spelling the word 'potato' as 'potatoe' was a small issue. Data structures were complex within the Construct3 environment. Finally, hosting the website was a challenge due to the RestAPI server as it presented difficult dependency issues.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As a team of three, we are proud that we completed an ambitious project that provides a solution to an interesting sustainability problem. We added extra functionality at the end (review functionality) that we had initially not scoped for.
What we learned
We learnt a lot about locally-produced vegetables, and different sustainable food businesses that operate around Bath. We also furthered our understanding of web and game design when under a strict time limit.
What's next for Seasonal Pickings
We are excited to expand the game to include the other seasons, expand the game area, and increase the geographic reach of our brand. We are looking forward to bringing out new, fun recipes for the seasons to come, and receiving feedback from our knowledgeable stakeholders.
