Inspiration

Our inspiration was protecting our planet's water resources, caring for our dying oceans, and fighting against rising sea levels. We have two juniors, a sophomore, and a freshman, all with diverse programming knowledge. We decided to implement Figma to visualize our app idea properly. We chose to advertise our app to ocean conservatory volunteering organizations because of their lack of monetary support from outside groups and to make data collection a more streamlined process.

What it does

Allow volunteers to track how much garbage they clean from the ocean and allow organizations to track cumulative waste collected from the oceans. Incentivizes and motivates volunteers through leadership boards and fun activities to make a difference in our oceans. It makes us come together as a society connected by our oceans.

How we built it

We spent hours storyboarding on the implementation of the app SeaSaver. We ultimately decided to design it using Figma, with plans to develop the actual code for the application given more time. We demo the app using unique plug-ins, frames, animations, prototypes, interactions, and a visualization tool.

Challenges we ran into

The challenges we ran into consisted of figuring out how to use Figma and how the animations worked in the software. In addition to the app's ideation, we couldn't figure out exactly what our design language and target demographic were.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of learning with people with various levels of experience and having it be a teaching moment for all of us. This was our first time doing a complete UI project, and we managed our time splendidly. Our communication was top-notch, with everyone involved discussing who would be assigned which task.

What we learned

We have a fantastic understanding of the Figma framework and how to use it properly. Should future classes require it, we'll be prepared. We learned that hackathons are about making friends and having fun while still building an understanding of working in a fast-paced team environment.

What's next for SeaSaver

Building the actual app, having it functional for volunteer groups, and implementing the sponsor matching program. Eventually, SeaSaver will be fully developed with partnerships with various volunteering organizations and sponsors.
