Inspiration

This was not as much an attempt to win a hackathon as we would have stood a much better shot had we used technologies we were familiar with. Our inspiration was to have fun and learn some new technologies this weekend. The project itself has a goal to connect consumers to local businesses in an easy and intuitive manner.

What it does

The web application was intended to be a business directory focused on local companies that provide take-out and curb-side-pickup. Entries in the database would have been curated initially by filtering google map results to exclude chain brands. The database would then also be edited by the application owner and users. A feature would have been included as a way for users to flag non local businesses. Via geocoding markers would be placed on the map from the addresses in the database then the data would also be available in a list view on the left side.

How we built it

Lots and lots of google services Maps API, Places API, Geocoding API Django Html5 Css Javascript JSON (Attempted)

Challenges we ran into

Learning how to use Django Learning how to use connect a Django application to CockroachDB Cloud Learning how to deploy a Django application to Google Cloud compute engine Incorporating the database with the maps api Database firewall issues

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Learning how to use Django Learning how to use connect a Django application to CockroachDB Cloud Learning how to deploy a Django application to Google Cloud compute engine Learning multiple google services Attaining a better understanding of the development process Attending our first hackathon!

What we learned

Learning how to use Django Learning how to use connect a Django application to CockroachDB Cloud Learning how to deploy a Django application to Google Cloud compute engine Google Places, Google Maps, Geocoding, Local Context View

What's next for Search Local

We would like to finish this application and add it to our portfolios. It would also be interesting upon completion to potentially release it to our community for real usage and possible feedback.
