Search Like A Local

Inspiration

I'm British but living in Hungary. Often I'll find myself Googling for something local, but if I try my query in English, I'll often be limited to sites written in English. But if I search in Hungarian I'll get closer to what I'm looking for.

I figured I could use OpenAI to build an app to help people automatically translate queries from English into their local language.

What it does

Just as I described. You type your search phrase in English, select the local language, and the app gives you back the perfect search term and a Google search link.

How I built it

I build everything in Replit using Python and Flask, and this app is no different. Building the UI was pretty simple and the backend is a few simple API calls to OpenAI.

Challenges I ran into

I decided I wanted the translated phase to appear without a page load, so I had to learn to use AJAX for that.

I also anticipated people typing NSFW search phrases into the app, so I built in an OpenAI moderation check into the loop.
