Inspiration
As climate change worsens each year, we wanted to create a tool that gives people a little more control over how they can reduce their carbon footprint. Our project aims to show users how much their lifestyle affects the environment (specifically the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere) and then gives them recommendations on how they could reduce that amount.
What it does
Our project allows users to undergo a short conversational onboarding that asks them about the 4 highest impact categories (home energy, shopping, transport, and diet) and our custom carbon footprint calculator takes those responses and gives them benchmarks of their footprint emissions (CO2e per year) and how their compare to others in their zip code area. It also gives users a 'single best move' recommendation on how they reduce their carbon footprint emission.
How we built it
We coded the web-application with React and Node.js, with the assistance of AI.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into many git merge conflicts.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of coding this web-application (with the help of AI) in a language (React + Node.js) that we are not familiar with. We are also proud to have worked on a project together, giving us more experience in web application development.
What we learned
We learned how to work with a new language we had previously never worked with before. We learned how to resolve merge conflicts and how to better prevent making those mistakes as well.
What's next for Seafoot
In the future, we may diversify our web application and add more pages, more detailed solutions, and add a chatbot agent designed to assist users on a more personalized level.
