Inspiration
Many apps on the market are ruled by step-count and distances without really motivating users to go outside with a meaningful purpose. With this concern in mind, we created this application to motivate users to step outside and explore anywhere outside whether its the user's neighborhood or a beach far away from cities.
What it does
Our application would generate 10 different "dares", which are just challenges for the users to complete over a week. These challenges will be categorized into 4 difficulties; simple ones may include finding a blue item, while harder ones may include watching sunrise. From completing the challenges the users would earn points based on the difficulty and can use those points to buy fish to fill up their own "sea".
How we built it
We started off by building the login/authentication page, and setting up a database with Supabase. Afterwards, we split into two different directions, where Sammi worked on the backend and Yoko worked on the frontend. On the backend, we connected the app to Gemini, which generates the dares based on accessibility features that the user has already defined, as well as check photo proofs for the "dares" completed. On the frontend, we made the application into an intuitive little game that hopefully motivates people to get outside more!
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into included the design of the app; we wanted it to look modern and polished while still retaining the fun element of a game. We also wanted Gemini to generate "dares" that are inclusive and respect different peoples' needs, which is often a huge pain point to people with disabilities using physical wellness apps.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
An accomplishment that we're proud of is utilizing Gemini AI to generate "dares" while considering user's accessibility preferences. We have preferences like 'I need to sit often" or "I use a wheelchair" that the users can choose from. We're proud of this not only because it makes our app more inclusive but also aligning with our inspiration, motivating people to step-outside and not let inaccessibility rule you out!
What we learned
On the technical side, we learned how to fit Gemini's responses to certain data structures instead of returning plain text answers, and how to best design the data structure for this purpose. While designing the app, we also learned a lot about elements that make gamification work: how to keep people hooked and motivated to keep going.
What's next for Sea You Outside
- Weekly review/roundup
- Creating a multiplayer feature to motivate group outgoings
- Using low poly models to animate fish swimming across the sea
- Decorations of the sea, bubble animations
AI Usage
We used Claude to help generate dummy data for the demo as well as starting points for the prompts that we ultimately feed to Gemini.
