Inspiration

Personal struggles with phone addiction have led us to want to create a project that encourages human connection.

What it does

It tracks your behaviour on your device and creates a rating of how addictive your behaviour patterns are. If it reaches a certain threshold, it will send a message to a designated trusted contact encouraging them to speak with you given your recent behaviour. This is for the people that recognise their own addictive behaviours and want to keep them under control, whilst still encouraging social interaction with those they care about to get them away from the doom scrolling and gacha gaming, and back into reality.

How we built it

We used a predictive model trained on large csv datasets with different phone usage metrics and had it analyse given inputs to produce a score of how addictive the users behaviour is. Then we made a page to represent what behaviours are most high risk and how it's calculated for the user to understand their own behaviours better, and another page where they can designate a trusted contact which would be messaged once the score breaches a certain threshold.

Challenges we ran into

Deciding upon the project and creating a cohesive system that referenced each other. We also lost two of our group members less than two hours into the event. We also faced communication barriers regarding the contents of what we'd be creating and the method of creating it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We managed to overcome the communication barriers and loss of team members to create a prototype demo of the project idea which we were only able to come up with late into the event.

What we learned

We learned the importance of communication and diagramming and coming up with a system architecture and idea of what to make before creating things and a way to ensure that workflow streams weren't dependent upon one persons portion of the project being completed first.

What's next for SCVYJ

Since our team was formed on the day it is unlikely that us as a team will continue to work on future projects together. It is true however that we're all keen to learn from these experiences of collaboration to become more adaptable workers with sharper skills of working in a team coding environment.
