Inspiration

We were inspired by the common problem many non-local and out-of-state college students face of being unfamiliar with their surrounding area when entering a new university, and the often frustrating process of planning activities. When planning what to do with their free time, non-locals not only encounter the issue of having an overwhelming number of activities to choose from, but must also deal with the added stress of coordinating the operating hours and travel time for multiple locations. By identifying these pain points, we saw a great opportunity to design a solution and thus centered our project around the Visionary's Challenge and the Beginner's Track for Designverse 2024.

What it does

Whether it be a restaurant, cafe, or hiking trail, Scurry allows users to select how long they will be in a specific area and generates a curated schedule with several recommended activities a user can choose from based on their preferences. Our goal was to help non-locals better utilize their precious time during the day, and Scurry seeks to make that process as stress-free as possible.

How we built it

Scurry was designed through multiple iterations of sketching and low-fidelity wireframing. Additionally, we conducted user research, surveyed a total of 23 college students during the 24-hour period, and condensed the research results into a user persona in order to further support our design decisions. After these steps, our high-fidelity prototype was finally created and refined.

Challenges we ran into

Two specific challenges we faced when designing Scurry were deciding which features would benefit our users the most while aligning with our problem statement, and ensuring that our high-fidelity prototype was functioning as intended. The 24-hour time constraint was a major factor in adding stress to our design process, requiring us to think and adapt quickly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re incredibly proud of the amount of detail put into the visual design of Scurry, our effective time management during the designathon, and our final product that was only possible by our team’s combined efforts.

What we learned

One of our biggest takeaways was the importance of spending time to brainstorm and truly define the root problem that our users are facing. Our team’s initial lack of a solid foundation resulted in mediocre ideas that set us back hours, consequently wasting precious time had we dedicated more time to the problem stage of our design process.

What's next for Scurry

Our next steps to improve Scurry would be to flesh out the social aspect of the app; the ability for users to invite friends and share events would serve to increase engagement and make the app more enjoyable. Additionally, we would work to implement data from Google Maps reviews or Yelp within Scurry if we were to fully develop it into a functional mobile app.
