Inspiration

I've always wanted to create a word search game, but I didn't want one that was purely a list of words and a grid. My idea was to allow players to progress through levels and different locations.

What it does

The game allows you to progress a Scuba Diver by completing word grids, in different locations around the world. As you complete the grids, you unlock new locations and marine life. The marine life also appears in you Messages Sticker collection

How I built it

I've developed this purely using Codex, its an iOS app that utilises SpriteKit.

Challenges I ran into

  • Ensuring that word grids were not repetitive, there was enough variation and words where placed in random directions
  • Getting the aesthetics right was key, I wanted it to feel like you were making true progression while playing the game.
  • The real challenge, as I'm no game artist, was coming up with a coherent set of assets, that could be animated and modularised

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • not being afraid to change direction when elements of the game play didn't feel connected
  • integration with Revenue Cat, especially virtual currency
  • better understanding of game mechanics
  • image asset management

What I learned

  • integration with Revenue Cat was a breeze

What's next for Scubaword

  • more locations
  • more grids
  • more customisation
