Inspiration
In today's time, younger adults tend to spend too much time on their phones, especially consuming short term content in the form of Instagram Reels, Tiktok, etc. Many view this type of activity as wasteful, and meaningless. Scrollagotchi flips this narrative by turning that habit into a productive act of love and care.
What it does
Scrollagotchi is a Google Chrome extension that gives you a digital pet Pomeranian that thrives off of your Instagram activity, the more you scroll or engage, the longer he survives. However, if you stop scrolling for too long, your pet starts to fade away.
How we built it
We built Scrollagotchi mainly using the Chrome extension framework to handle real-time tracking and animation. We also used Google Gemini throughout development, generating the pixel-art assets and overall streamlining the implementation of the logistics.
Challenges we ran into
We struggled a lot with the API logistics part, for example, the different cases for when the listeners and alarms would trigger when the user clicked away from an instagram tab or tabs in general. We also had struggles with some css, especially when trying to center a div properly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It was our first time developing a Chrome Extension so we're glad it worked out in the end, we learned a lot about the Extension framework and its capabilities.
What we learned
We learned a lot about web permissions. Web APIs and Javascript development.
