Inspiration

Look around any room today, and you’ll see the exact same view: heads tilted down, faces illuminated by the soft, blue glow of a screen, and fingers executing the infinite doomscroll. We live in an era where our average daily screen time rivals a full-time job except instead of a paycheck, we get brain fog, terrible posture, and a sudden expertise in niche internet drama.

We asked ourselves a simple question: What if we could redirect that passive energy into real-world action?

That was the spark for Scroll2Sport. We wanted to build a bridge between our digital habits and physical well-being a tool that gamifies screen reduction by turning excess scrolling time into physical activity goals. If you have time to scroll through 200 short-form videos, you have time to run a kilometer!

What it does

Scroll2Sport turns unproductive screen time into active health by delivering personalized, accessible movement breaks whenever your scrolling session runs long. By tracking your time spent on devices and evaluating your profile including your fitness level, age, physical mobility needs (such as seated or low-impact options), available equipment, and time constraints the application dynamically generates tailored exercise routines complete with built-in timers and detailed instructions. Rather than forcing rigid, generic gym plans, Scroll2Sport seamlessly prompts you to take quick, meaningful breaks, allowing you to complete timed workouts, monitor your history, and build consistent habits through a clean visual dashboard of your total active minutes.

How we built it

We built Scroll2Sport during the 48-hour PeddieHacks 2026 hackathon using a lightweight, full-stack architecture designed for performance and accessibility. The backend was constructed in Python using Flask to serve a RESTful API, with Flask-SQLAlchemy and SQLite handling relational data storage for user profiles, session tracking, and exercise logs. On the frontend, we used HTML5, modern CSS, and vanilla JavaScript (ES6+) to build an intuitive, responsive dashboard with zero unnecessary framework overhead. Working as a remote two-person team, we maintained strict Git discipline using isolated feature/ branches and pull requests to seamlessly integrate the core scrolling timer, adaptive recommendation algorithm, and progress-tracking analytics into a stable, production-ready application.

Challenges we ran into

Building Scroll2Sport under a strict 48-hour timeline was an exercise in pure adaptability as real-world chaotic interruptions continually tested our resilience. Midway through the hackathon, both of our households suffered complete electricity outages, forcing us to pack up our rigs and migrate to neighbors' and relatives' houses just to secure basic power and Wi-Fi access to keep coding. To make matters worse, one of our teammates' laptops completely crashed right in the middle of a critical development phase, threatening to wipe out progress and throwing a wrench into our integration timeline. Despite the power outages, hardware failures, and tricky remote Git merge conflicts, we relied heavily on strict version control practices and modular code design to recover quickly, keep our repository intact, and deliver a fully functional project on time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are most proud of turning an unexpected series of chaotic hurdles from sudden power outages and moving between households to mid-hackathon laptop crashes into a fully functional, highly inclusive sports platform before the deadline. Beyond overcoming the technical and physical chaos, we take immense pride in building a tool that prioritizes accessibility from day one, ensuring that anyone regardless of mobility limitations, age, or available equipment can easily convert mindless screen time into meaningful physical activity. Delivering a clean, production-ready full-stack application with strict Git discipline under intense pressure proved to us how adaptable, resilient, and effective we can be as a remote duo.

What we learned

Through this hackathon, we learned that true project success depends just as much on adaptability and version control discipline as it does on writing clean code. Facing extreme real-world challenges such as sudden power outages and severe laptop crashes taught us the indispensable value of frequent Git commits and remote push habits, which saved our project from total data loss. On the technical side, we deepened our understanding of building RESTful APIs with Flask and managing seamless asynchronous data flow with vanilla JavaScript. Above all, we learned how to ruthlessly prioritize core functionality to ship a fully working, inclusive product under intense time pressure without sacrificing quality or accessibility.

What's next for Scroll2Sport

Looking ahead, our main goal is to expand Scroll2Sport into a fully integrated native mobile app. To enhance security and user management, we plan to implement secure user authentication, including an email verification process for account setup and password recovery. A major milestone will be adding automatic screen time tracking via system permissions (such as iOS Screen Time and Android Digital Wellbeing APIs), eliminating the need for manual session tracking. By directly analyzing real-time usage data such as identifying long periods of continuous doomscrolling the app will automatically evaluate your fatigue levels and dynamically prescribe the exact type, intensity, and duration of physical activity needed to balance out your screen time.
