Inspiration
Scripture Sleuth was inspired by the challenge of biblical literacy in a digital age. With AI able to generate convincing text on any topic, we wondered: can people still distinguish authentic scripture from cleverly crafted fakes? This puzzle format makes learning scripture engaging while training critical thinking skills.
What it does
Scripture Sleuth is a daily puzzle game where players must identify which of 5 Bible verses is fake. Each day at midnight UTC, a new puzzle is posted featuring 4 real scripture passages and 1 cleverly crafted fake verse.
How It Works
- Players read 5 Bible verses on a daily theme (Wisdom, Love, Faith, etc.)
- They identify which verse was made up
- After guessing, they learn why the fake was wrong and discover the real verses
- Each real verse connects to a thematically relevant subreddit
- Streaks, achievements, and leaderboards track progress
Key Features
- Daily Puzzles: New puzzle every day at midnight UTC
- One Guess Rule: Choose carefully - you only get one shot
- Scripture Learning: Discover real Bible verses and their meanings
- Subreddit Connections: Each real verse maps to a related subreddit (e.g., "Love your neighbor" → r/HumansBeingBros)
- Streak Tracking: Build consecutive correct day streaks
- 8 Achievements: From "First Discovery" to "30-day Streak"
- Leaderboards: Compete on streak and accuracy rankings
- User Contributions: Submit your own fake verse ideas
- Community Stats: See how your guess compares to others
How we built it
Built on Reddit's Devvit platform using React 18 + TypeScript for the WebView frontend. The parchment-themed UI uses Tailwind CSS with carefully chosen colors (#faf3e3 background, #722f37 burgundy, #c9a227 gold) and Georgia serif typography.
Backend uses Devvit Redis for persistent storage of user progress, streaks, and statistics. A Devvit Scheduler automatically posts new puzzles at midnight UTC daily.
Verses are shuffled using a deterministic algorithm seeded with user ID and puzzle ID, ensuring fairness while preventing answer-sharing.
Challenges we ran into
Creating convincing fake verses that sound biblical but have subtle tells was challenging. We also had to ensure the shuffle algorithm was fair across all users while preventing cheating through browser inspection.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- 126 curated puzzles providing 4+ months of daily content
- Unique subreddit connection feature that bridges ancient wisdom with modern Reddit communities
- Achievement system that rewards consistent engagement
- Mobile-responsive design with touch-optimized card selection
What we learned
Biblical language has distinct patterns that are hard to fake convincingly. The project deepened our appreciation for scripture while teaching us about creating engaging daily game mechanics.
