Inspiration

Film production planning often starts with a screenplay, but turning that screenplay into an actionable production breakdown can be slow and repetitive. Independent filmmakers, students, and small production teams may not have dedicated departments to manually identify every cast member, location, prop, wardrobe requirement, effect, sound cue, and production risk. ScriptBreak was inspired by the idea of making that process faster, clearer, and more accessible with AI.

What it does

ScriptBreak is an AI-powered film pre-production assistant that transforms screenplay scenes into structured production breakdowns.

Users can paste a screenplay scene into the platform, and ScriptBreak analyzes it to identify key production requirements such as cast, locations, props, wardrobe, makeup, set requirements, sound, VFX/SFX, equipment, vehicles, production risks, and overall scene complexity.

Instead of returning a generic AI response, ScriptBreak organizes the analysis into production-focused categories that filmmakers can quickly understand and use.

Screenplay in. Production plan out.

How we built it

ScriptBreak was built as a lightweight full-stack web application designed around one focused workflow: screenplay analysis.

The frontend provides a cinematic workspace where users can paste or load a screenplay scene and view the generated breakdown through structured production cards.

On the backend, ScriptBreak securely connects to the Gemini API. Gemini analyzes the screenplay using a production-focused prompt and returns structured data, which is then validated and mapped into the user interface.

The project was intentionally kept lightweight for the hackathon, without unnecessary authentication, database, or project-management features.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was turning AI-generated screenplay analysis into consistent, structured production data rather than unorganized text.

We also needed to design the Gemini integration so that API credentials remained secure on the server side while keeping the application responsive and reliable.

Another challenge was balancing detail with usability. A screenplay can contain many production elements, so the interface had to present enough information to be useful without overwhelming the user.

Finally, working within the limited hackathon timeframe required us to prioritize a strong core workflow instead of building too many secondary features.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that ScriptBreak turns a simple screenplay input into a detailed and visually organized production breakdown in a matter of seconds.

We successfully integrated Gemini as a meaningful part of the product rather than using AI only as a generic chatbot.

We also created a workflow that can analyze different screenplay scenes dynamically and extract practical filmmaking requirements across multiple production categories.

Most importantly, the project demonstrates a clear path from creative writing to actionable film production planning.

What we learned

We learned that AI becomes significantly more useful when it is combined with domain-specific structure and workflows.

Instead of simply asking a language model to "analyze a screenplay," defining clear filmmaking categories and structured outputs produces results that are much more practical for real users.

We also learned the importance of keeping a hackathon product focused. Building one reliable end-to-end experience can create more value than implementing many incomplete features.

What's next for ScriptBreak

The next step is to expand ScriptBreak from individual scene analysis into full-screenplay production planning.

Future versions could include PDF screenplay import, automatic multi-scene breakdowns, production summaries, continuity checks, exportable production reports, budgeting assistance, scheduling support, and team collaboration.

The long-term vision is for ScriptBreak to become a complete AI-assisted pre-production workspace that helps filmmakers move from script to shoot with greater speed, clarity, and confidence.
