Inspiration
"This is how you do it: You sit down at the keyboard and you put one word after another until it's done. It's that easy, and that hard.", Neil Gaiman
As an aspiring author who spent most of my life with my head in the clouds and my nose stuck in a book, I wanted to use my skills in web development and design to develop a web application that allows users to set writing goals for themselves over a period of time. I used to participate in National Novel Writing Month in November and I found their word count tracker to be very effective in getting words down on paper, so I believed this to be a tool beneficial for other authors like me. The world is always in need of more stories.
What it does
This web app helps authors and students's writting as a tool to automatically set writting goals for each day, and also tracking and give feedbacks for their current progress.
How I built it
This app is built using HTML and CSS and Javascript, with Firebase as its backend database.
Challenges I ran into
Chris: I initially wanted to use React.js to power the web application, but four hours into the hackathon, I realized this wasn't as doable as I wanted it to be. Ray: The challenges I faced during this project are primarily due my lack of experience in web development. I spent a large portion of my time researching and debugging because of the poor code structure.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Chris: I'm really proud that we were able to execute this concept, especially in the space of less than twenty-four hours, because I know this can be beneficial for so many writers out there (like me!) Ray: Despite the somewhat low quality code I wrote, I'm still proud of my work in this project, as I learnt the basics to develop in a new platform in just one day.
What I learned
Chris: I learned to work with the CSS framework UI Kit. Ray: This was my first time doing web development.
What's next for Scribe
We intend on further polishing of the user interface, testing for and fixing bugs, and making the app more feature complete in the near future.
